Ralang Monastery

This monastery is ideally located at Ralang. Situated at a distance of about thirteen kilometers from Ravangla. Nearly one and half kilometers further downhill on the same road is the Old Ralang Gompa.  The Old monastery was built in the year 1768 AD. It is said that the 9th Karmapa, then head of the Kagyupa sect of Buddhism blessed the site of the monastery with grains of rice thrown from Tibet. Pang Lhabsol, the worship of Mount. Kanchendzonga and Kagyed Chaam (masked dances) is held in the monastery every year. It is situated towards the north of Rabongla and is 45 minutes' drive from it. Ralong is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim and the annual dance ritual and fair is held every year in the month of December during Lossong / Lassong Festival. There is lot of tourist visiting the site from all over the globe. Two more nearby places to visit are Borong Cha - Chu / Ralang Cha – Chu. It is nearly one hour trek from Ralang Monastery to Rangit Valley and the trek is downhill.

 

Borong Cha-chu is nearly 7 to 8 kilometers drive from Ralang and an additional hour trek downhill. Borong and Ralang Hot water spring are situated along the banks of the Rangit River. These two natural Hot Springs are famous for its medicinal / therapeutic values.

 
It is a Buddhist monastery of the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism in the state of Sikkim in India. It is located approximately (Six) 06 kilometres from Ravangla. Situated at an altitude of 8000 feet  Ravangla has awesome beauty is one that elates all hearts. The view of Greater Himalayas. Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Pandim, Mount Sinialchu, Mount Kabru are extremely fascinating from here. April and May is known for the beautiful flowers in full bloom will greet you to this place. Even visit to Ravangla is beautiful trip with a visit to the Buddhsit monasteries of the region is satisfying.  It is believed that Ralang was built after the fourth Chogyal came back from his pilgrimage, then the 9th Karmapa performed the Rabney (blessing). He threw grains from his residence in Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and where the grains fell, eventually, became the site for the Ralang Monastery. 
 

Reconstruction  was carried out in this monastery between the period of 1975 - 1981. Old Ralang Monastery is one of the most important and sacred monasteries in Sikkim following the Kagyupa tradition. The new monastery, "Palchen Choeling Monastic Institute", came up in the year 1995. It was constructed by the XIIth Gyaltsab Rimpoche who is counted amongst the four regents of the Kagyupa sect. Even after the reconstruction, the monastery has retain its authentic Tibetan architecture. The Monastery has an extensive collection of paintings and thangkas. The monastery is nearly 05 kilometers from Ravangla. Tumlong monastery was constructed in the year 1840 and is situated near Kewzing village. The the word literally Dalling means 'the thunderbolt'. Mangbrue Gompa is a gompa is known for the fantastic views it offers of the mountain and hills and is located 8 kilometers above Kewzing. 

Yangyang Monastery is located 10 kilometers downhill from Ravangla, was constructed in the year 1840. Tha name of the monastery, Yangyang means the ridge of fortune. Tashiding Monastery is one of the most famous monasteries of the state and is situated approxinmately 40 kilometers away from Ravangla. It was constructed in the year 1716. The annual festival of 'Bumchu' is celebrated in this monastery. Namchi Monastery was built during the rule of Chogyal Gurmed Namgyal, this monastery is in Namchi, the district headquarters of south Sikkim.

The nearest airport is located at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) which is nearly 102 kilometers from Namchi and another 22 kilometers to Ravangla. Flights to and from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Bangalore, Mumbai, Paro and Bangkok at this airport.The nearest railway terminal is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) at a distance of 125 kilometers from Ravangla and is the closest rail head. Ravangla is nearly 24 kilometers from Namchi. From Siliguri / Bagdogra Airport (IXB) / New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) vehicles are available for Ravangla or Namchi. From Siliguri Namchi is a drive of three to four hours and is approximately 102 kilometers.
