Chitwan - Chitwan is known for the famous Chitwan National Park and is the first national park in Nepal. It was earlier known as the Royal Chitwan National Park. Established in 1973 and was granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. The Park is spread over an area of nearly 932 square kilometers and shares its eastern boundary with the Parsa Wildlife Reserve. It is situated in the subtropical inner Terai lowlands of south - central Nepal in the district of Chitwan. It is situated at an elevation ranging from about 100 meters / 330 feet near the river valleys to 815 meters / 2674 feet in the Churia Hills. There are lodges inside the national park and other accommodation with option of elephant ride, jeep safaris, rafting tours and guided jungle walks. It is now listed in the World Heritage site by UNESCO. The Park consists of a diversity of ecosystems - including the Churia hills, Ox-bow lakes and the flood plains of the Rapti, Reu and Narayani Rivers. Some of the adventure that one can indulge in Chitwan are elephant ride  the most popular way of exploring the Chitwan jungle, Canoeing along the Rapti river is also an option, Spotting by luck few Gharial crocodiles, marsh muggers, variety of fish and with better luck one can spot Gangetic dolphin. Birding is also an option with spotting of kingfishers, ospreys,egrets, etc.

Wild life includes tigers, leopards, sloth bears and the population of nearly 800 rhinoceroses. Bengal foxes, Spotted linsangs, binturongs, fishing cats, marbled cats, golden jackals, Indian wild dogs, sloth bears, palm civets, Large and Small Indian civets, several species of mongoose, jungle cats, clouded leopards, leopard cats, honey badgers, yellow-throated martens etc can be spotted here at Chitwan The park’s headquarter is in Kasara and nearby is the Gharial and Turtle conservation breeding centers worth visiting. There is also a breeding center for critically endangered Vultures known as the Oriental white-backed vulture and the slender-billed vulture. Vegetation consist of broad leaf forests with Sal trees, Catechu (Acacia catechu), Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo), chir pine (Pinus roxburghii). Shrub like Beleric (Terminalia bellirica), Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo), Axlewood (Anogeissus latifolia), Elephant Apple (Dillenia indica), Grey Downy Balsam (Garuga pinnata), Velvety beautyberry (Callicarpa macrophylla), Hill Glory Bower (Clerodendrum viscosum), Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica) with creepers like Bauhinia vahlii, Spatholobus parviflorus, etc can be found here. Grassland includes Saccharum ravennae, Kans grass (Saccharum spontaneum), Giant cane (Arundo donax), Khagra reed (Phragmites karka) and several species of other grasses. Two general categories of hotels exist: luxury and budget. The luxury hotels in Chitwan are inside the Park itself. They cost about bit high per person per night and provide an exquisite experience. Swimming pool, cocktail bars, safari ambience, organized game spotting trips, orientation by trained naturalists, etc are available with them. Communication / Connectivity

Airways – There are regular daily flights to Bharatpur, about 25 kilometers from the Park area and to Meghauli. The flights take about half an hour. One can easily get rides from the airports to the Park area.

Railways – Chitwan is accessible only by road and airways. There is as such no railway system in Nepal but one can reach any of the bordering town of Nepal by availing Indian Railways.

Roadways – Chitwan is easily accessible from Kathmandu being well connected by national highway to Bharatpur and Saurana. Public buses go to Tadi from Kathmandu and Pokhara. It takes about seven hours from Kathmandu; six from Pokhara and from Tadi, either one have to cover the six kilometer distance to Sauraha on an ox cart or in a rented jeep for.

River - The trip normally starts at Mugling, 110 kilometer out of Kathmandu on the Kathmandu – Pokhara - Chitwan road. The trip itself is an easy river cruise that takes two or three days.
