Paro

 

Paro is small and beautiful country in Bhutan or the country of Dragon. It is situated in the Paro Valley of Eastern Himalaya; the town is full of legends, beauty, heroism and natural splendor. This beautiful town of Paro is in western Bhutan attracts tourists with its scenic beauty, beautiful landscapes, wooded villages, historic buildings, Dzongs, etc. Though, the capital of Bhutan is Thimpu but for a long time of the history Paro had the control. The town is located at an elevation of 2250 meters / 7430 feet. Paro has river flowing gently on its side and making it the most beautiful valley in the country. Visit Paro in the spring / Autumn and enjoy the Kaleidoscope of striking colors this place.

Situated amidst patches of rice paddies, trout filled stream and scattered settlements the place is one of the most visited place in Bhutan. This fascinating valley is home to many of oldest temples, monasteries as well as Bhutan's only airport. Ta Dzong was a fortified Watch tower and is serving as the National Museum of the kingdom since 1967. The Museum holds vast collection of ancient Buddhist treasures, artifacts and Bhutan's exquisite postage stamps. A walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong which literally means a fortress of the heap of Jewels is pleasant. Paro experience more climatic changes in a small area than any other part of the world. While the day temperature in this region can go up to 15ºC and night temperature can go below the freezing point. Spring, mid - December to mid - January is a beautiful experience here with clear blue sky and dry climate. Summer is through May to August is warm and wet. Autumn, October through November is very mild with clear skies. Built in 1656 in Paro is the conch shell shaped Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower which is also the National Museum of Bhutan and worth visiting. It is located at the hilltop above Paro Ringpung Dzong. Exhibits include collection of thankas; Bhutan’s stamp collection, including some stamps that you can listen to on a player. A nice evening activity is to visit the Drukgyal Dzong but at present in ruins it was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Kichu Lhakhang and Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery are the most important places in Bhutanese Buddhism. Those who can trek for 2 - 4 hours Taktsang or Tigers Nest visit should be taken up. A place of beauty and a day extra is needed to enjoy the Monastery.

 Communication / Connectivity -

Airways – Nearest Airport is Paro. Bagdogra airport (IXB) is 182 Kilometer from Phuentsholing. Bhutan’s national air carrier, Druk Air, operates several flights per week from Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, etc to Paro. One of the spectacular flights flies passengers through the stretch between Kathmandu and Bhutan. The flight passes along the Himalayan Range and all the peaks seems so close to eyes, it’s a flight to cherish. Recent addition is the flight from Paro to Bangkok via Bagdogra airport.

Roadways – Jaigaon the Indian border town is 180 kilometers from Siliguri. Phuentsholling is three / four hour's drive from Bagdogra / New Jalpaiguri and six to seven hour’s drive from Gangtok or Darjeeling.  The Royal Bhutanese Government runs a bus service to Phuentsholing from Kolkata. These buses depart from Kolkata Esplanade bus station and reaches Phuentsholing via Siliguri. Phuentsholling is the only entry / exit point via road. The other is only entry point is in Assam.

Railways – There are no railway in Bhutan. Government of India is planning to set up a railway network as per a recent understanding between the two countries. New Jalpaiguri is the major Railway Station (NJP) is the nearest major railway terminal. Yet one can travel close up to the Bhutan border by Indian Railway to Hashimara. Nearest major railway station is Alipurduar but Birpara is close by a few kilometers in the Northern Frontier Railway.Type Here
