Capital Shillong was a popular hill station during colonial times, with leftover features being a championship golf course and polo ground, Victorian bungalows, and churches. Airways: Shillong Airport (SHL) has an airport at Umroi 30 kilometres from Shillong on the Guwahati - Shillong highway is now being expanding to accommodate flights. Chopper service and small aircraft operate but not on a regular basis. The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati and is nearly 135 kilometres and is nearly 03 hours drive along the scenic road. There is also a helicopter service connecting Shillong to Guwahati. Baljek Airport (VETU) near Tura will be operational soon. Indian Airlines, Jet Airlines, Indigo, Vistara, Spicejet connect Guwahati to Delhi, Calcutta and other cities of India. There are international flights also in Guwahati
Railways: Meghalaya has a railhead at Mendipathar (MNDP) and regular train service connecting Mendipathar in Meghalaya and Guwahati in Assam, has started recently. There is a plan for extending the rail link from Guwahati to Byrnihat i.e. 20 kilometres from Guwahati, within Meghalaya and further extending it up to state capital Shillong. Guwahati Railway Station 9GHY) is the closest railway station. Shillong is only 03 Hours drive from Guwahati.
Roadways: The state has developed road Road Network which covers the state conveniently and is well maintained. National Highway 40 connects the state with Guwahati and other cities of the country. Most of the arrivals into the Meghalaya take place through Guwahati in neighbouring Assam, which is nearly 103 kilometres away. Meghalaya is also connected to Silchar, Kaziranga in Assam, Aizawl in Mizoram and Agartala in Tripura through National Highways. Regular bus services and private and Commercial vehicle are available to all major towns of Meghalaya and surrounding states. There are regular vehicle and bus to other state capitals and important towns of north-eastern States.
