Thimpu 

Thimpu also spelt Thimphu, is the capital and biggest city of Bhutan. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan and the surrounding valley is one of Bhutan's Dzongkhag, the Thimpu District. Thimphu is situated at an average elevation of nearly 2400 meters. The city is spread out longitudinally in a north-south direction on the west bank of the valley formed by the Wang Chuu, also known as the Thimpu Chuu River. Its elevation ranges between 2248 meters / 7375 feet and 2648 meters / 8688 feet. Thimphu is not served by an airport, but relies on the airport at Paro, connected by road some 55 kilometers drive. The unique aspect of Thimphu roads and the traffic control over the road net work is that it is one of the two national capitals in Asia that does not have traffic lights the other is Pyongyang, North Korea.

It is the centre of government, religion, commerce and the hub of Tourism. The capital has an interesting combination of tradition and modernity, Places to visit are to temples, Dzong, chortens, museums, handicraft stores, nunneries, parks and many more. Numerous archery tournaments are held here with both the imported compound bows and traditional bamboo bows. Archery is the national sports and can be seen during most of their festivals. Tsechu festival is celebrated with much fun fare with mask dances, popularly known as Cham dances, are performed in the courtyards of the Tashichhoe Dzong in Thimphu during the four day festival, held every year during Autumn i.e. October. The architecturally elegant in the traditional Bhutanese building structures in Thimphu are the Tashichho Dzong, Drubthob Goemba / Zilluka nunnery, Tango Goempa / Cheri Goempa, the Memorial Chorten, Dechen Phodrang, Changangkha Lhakhang, etc are all historic monuments and are worth visiting. The best landmark in Thimphu is the Tashichho Dzong located on the west bank of the Wang Chuu and the Tango Monastery is located to the north of Thimphu near Cheri Mountain. Other attractions are the National Post Office, the Clock Tower Square and the Motithang Takin Preserve

Communication / Connectivity 

 

Airways – Nearest Airport is Paro. Bagdogra airport (IXB) is 182 Kilometer from Phuentsholing. Bhutan’s national air carrier, Druk Air, operates several flights per week from Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, etc to Paro. One of the spectacular flights flies passengers through the stretch between Kathmandu and Bhutan. The flight passes along the Himalayan Range and all the peaks seems so close to eyes, it’s a flight to cherish. Recent addition is the flight from Paro to Bangkok via Bagdogra airport.

Roadways – Thimpu from Phuentsholling is 170 kilometers and the Indian border town is 180 kilometers from Siliguri.  Phuentsholling is three / four hour's drive from Bagdogra / New Jalpaiguri and six to seven hour’s drive from Gangtok or Darjeeling. The Royal Bhutanese Government runs a bus service to Phuentsholing from Kolkata. These buses depart from Kolkata Esplanade bus station and reaches Phuentsholing via Siliguri. Phuentsholling is the only entry / exit point via road. The other is only entry point is in Assam.

Railways – There are no railway in Bhutan. Government of India is planning to set up a railway network as per a recent understanding between the two countries. New Jalpaiguri is the major Railway Station (NJP) is the nearest major railway terminal. Yet one can travel close up to the Bhutan border by Indian Railway to Hashimara or to Alipurduar Junction. Nearest major railway station is Alipurduar but Birpara is close by a few kilometers in the Northern Frontier Railway.
