Himachal Pradesh - Himachal Pradesh literally means the snowy mountains and is also known as the lands of gods. It is a state in the Himalayan region spread over nearly 56,019 kilometers and the elevation of the state ranges from nearly 350 meters / 1148 feet to 6000 meters / 19685 feet. It is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on west and south - west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on south, Uttarakhand on south - east and by Tibet, China on the east. There are twelve districts namely Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, Lahul and Spiti, Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla and Una. The state climate varies from hot and humid tropical in the southern tracts to cold, alpine and glacial in the northern part. The variation is due the elevation of the region. Communication / Connectivity
Airways -Himachal Pradesh has no international airports but has three major domestic airports namely Shimla, Bhuntar and Gaggal. Bhuntar serves Kullu and Manali and Gaggal Airport serves Kangra and Dharamsala. They are is well connected with Delhi and Chandigarh. Air India, MDLR and other domestic service are available.
Railways - Railway system is not so developed due to the elevation in the state. Pathankot – Jogindernagar line connects the state of Punjab with Himachal Pradesh and other railway tracks pass through Shimla, Solan and Una. Shimla is connected with Kalka by a narrow gauge railway line. Kalka is well connected with most major cities of India. The state has two narrow gauge rail tracks. The Kalka - Shimla Railway track with 102 tunnels and crosses 864 bridges in a distance of 96 kilometers and is a beauty.
Roadways - There are regular bus services from Shimla to Ambala, Chail, Chandigarh, Delhi, Dehradun, Kullu, Manali, Mandi, Pathankot and other places. Local taxis are the major form of transport.
